Healthy Ageing and Prevention Index: Our impact

In 2019, we began our Prevention programme. Since then, we’ve undertaken an ambitious programme of work to move the needle on healthy ageing and hold governments to account on investing at least 6% on preventative health. This has sparked conversations across the globe including all the way to Japan and India for the G7 and G20 and New York for the UN General Assembly.

In 2023, we launched the Healthy Ageing and Prevention Index which is an interactive tool ranking 121 countries on six healthy ageing metrics (using data from 2019). As a result, we gained endorsement from health ministers at the World Health Assembly, have been invited to speak at a global conference in Seoul and approached by the Financial Times to use findings from the Index in an article about income and work.

In 2024, we launched the second wave of the Index (using 2022 data) and expanded the number of countries from 121 to 153. Through new analysis we found that since 2019, we’re living in an unhealthier, more unequal and less environmentally sustainable world. Our Index has led to bespoke projects on HIV, Universal Health Coverage, Mental Health, Immunosenescence and even a project alongside the Olympics, to identify what countries can do to better adapt to longevity.

We’ve achieved a lot. But there’s more that can be done to ensure people live not just longer, but healthier lives as well.

This slide deck summarizes what we’ve achieved so far in the first two years of the project and how we continue to shape the agenda on global health.

The ILC’s work on the Healthy Ageing and Prevention Index is made possible by charitable support and grants from Amgen, GSK, Hallmark Foundation, MSD, Pfizer and Sanofi.
