INTRODUCING THE INDEX

Investing in people’s health is vital for everyone’s wellbeing and to ensure that we can truly benefit from the “longevity dividend” that could result from an ageing population. Yet we know that across the globe, action and investment in healthy ageing and preventative health continues to lag.

This is where the Healthy Ageing and Prevention Index comes in.

It ranks 121 countries against six indicators: life span, health span, work span, income, environmental performance, and happiness. This allows us to compare how sustainable different countries are, both in terms of longer lives and the extent to which their governments are investing in efforts to prevent ill health and support healthy ageing.

We know prevention is better than cure. We know what works. Now we need to see action.

THE INDEX

How to use: Hover and click on a country to find out about their global country ranking or click on the tabs at the top to view a specific metric.

To zoom: Hold down ‘Ctrl’ key on Windows or ‘⌘’ key on Apple computers + scroll to zoom.
On touchscreens: Use two fingers to zoom and pan.

Notes
1. The Index uses pre-COVID baseline data from 2019 for five metrics. Environmental performance data is taken from 2020 because this data is released only every two years, making 2019 data unavailable.
2. The total number of countries in the global rankings and by individual metric varies. This is because there is incomplete data for 11 countries. These countries are included in the global rankings but excluded in those individual metric rankings for which data isn’t available. Data for life span, health span, and work span are available for all 121 countries.

Political and economic bloc rankings

The Index also ranks political and economic country blocs, such as the G20, EU and OECD to demand action on sustainable longevity at the global level.  View all countries per group.

How to use: Click on the tabs to view a specific metric. The number assigned to each political and economic bloc represents their global ranking, where Scandinavia is ranked 1st and African Union is ranked 9th .
