INTRODUCING THE INDEX
Investing in people’s health is vital for everyone’s wellbeing and to ensure that we can truly benefit from the “longevity dividend” that could result from an ageing population. Yet we know that across the globe, action and investment in healthy ageing and preventative health continues to lag.
This is where the Healthy Ageing and Prevention Index comes in.
It ranks 153 countries against six indicators: life span, health span, work span, income, environmental performance, and happiness. This allows us to compare how sustainable different countries are, both in terms of longer lives and the extent to which their governments are investing in efforts to prevent ill health and support healthy ageing. With two published sets of data, now we can also track progress over time to ensure we are having meaningful conversations about what must happen to keep people well for longer.
We know prevention is better than cure. We know what works. Now we need to see action.
THE INDEX
Notes:
- The Index uses data from 2022 for all six metrics. Where data is unavailable for that year, we use the most recent data available.
- The total number of countries in the global rankings and by individual metric varies. This is because there is incomplete data for 14 countries. Data for life span, health span, and work span are available for all 153 countries.
- The Index uses pre-COVID baseline data from 2019 for five metrics. Environmental performance data is taken from 2020 because this data is released only every two years, making 2019 data unavailable.
- The total number of countries in the global rankings and by individual metric varies. This is because there is incomplete data for 14 countries. Data for life span, health span, and work span are available for all 153 countries.

Change over time
(153 countries)
For the first time, the Index has two data sets: Wave 1: 2019 and Wave 2: 2022. Here you can track progress over time and see whether countries have improved in global rank and for each metric value.
Political and economic bloc rankings and metric values
The Index also ranks 12 political and economic country blocs, such as the G20, EU and OECD to demand action on sustainable longevity at the global level. Move between Wave 2: 2022 and Wave 1: 2019 tabs to see changes over time. View bloc membership.
HOW TO USE: Click on the tabs to view a specific metric. The number assigned to each political and economic bloc represents their global ranking, where the Nordic Cooperation is ranked 1st and the Commonwealth is ranked 12th.
