Speaking to the Lords Intergenerational Fairness Committee on 9 October 2018, Dr Brian Beach argued that:
- Government should use public policy to realise “fuller working lives” rather than “longer working lives”.
- Government should legislate to ensure that new jobs are advertised as flexible unless employers can demonstrate a clear business case against doing so.
- Government should better coordinate its public policy leadership on longevity.
Our 2014 report on The Missing Million revealed that of the 3.3 million economically inactive people aged 50-64, approximately 1 million people have been made ‘involuntarily workless’.
