About

The world is changing rapidly – and so too is our experience of longer lives, driven by technological, economic, societal and environmental changes. By 2040, almost one in four people will be aged 65 or over, and the number of people aged 85 and over is projected to reach 2.8 million, up from 1.7 million today. As technology continues to develop at a rapid pace, and the pressures of demographic change and climate change continue to build up, how will our experience of longer lives change in the next twenty years? Will we be working for longer or will our work be replaced by robots? Will more of us be learning via social media than at school or university? And what do service providers and government need to do to adapt and to make the most of these changes?

Through this futures-focused thought leadership project, we look forward to highlight how our experience of longer lives is likely to change over the next 20 years, and envision how government and service providers can best respond to them to make the most of this longevity dividend in our uncertain world.

We focus on six key areas:

  • health and care
  • how we manage our money
  • how we work and learn
  • how we get around
  • where we live
  • leisure and social connectedness

This project has been supported by Brightwell.
