Webinar: Public health and policy reform – Mitigating Increases in the State Pension Age (MISPA)
Date: Thursday, 14 May 2020
Time: 2.00pm – 3.30pm BST (9.00am – 10.30am EDT)
Successive governments have legislated for increases to the State Pension Age (SPA) as a way to reduce the fiscal impact of an ageing population. Such increases, however, do not happen in a vacuum, and there will be significant implications from a blanket policy encouraging people to stay in work longer. Early exit from the workforce remains an issue in the UK, and the support necessary to help people stay in work up to SPA will have to be extended to a larger pool of people with increases to SPA.
Speakers included:
- Prof Melanie Bartley, Professor Emerita, University College London
- Professor David Blane, Professor Emeritus, Imperial College London
- Dr Claire Mawditt, Research Fellow, Canon Foundation Europe
- Dr Jessica Sheringham, Honorary Consultant in Public Health, Public Health England
In this webinar, members of the informal MISPA group highlighted some of the unintended consequences for public health due to the legislated increases to the State Pension Age. Such consequences will impact the NHS, occupational health, social care, the voluntary sector, and older people themselves. Preparing for these impacts can help mitigate them, and the necessity of such preparation is underscored by the current COVID-19 crisis.
