Adult immunisation in Europe roundtable: Improving shingles vaccination uptake

Date: Thursday 11 January 2024
Time: 12.00pm – 1.30pm GMT
Location: Zoom

Join us at this roundtable to discuss the ILC-UK’s forthcoming report on shingles vaccination across Europe.

With more than 30% of the EU’s population set to be aged 65 and over by 2100, Europe is steadily ageing. Vaccination is known to prevent ill-health and can enhance healthy ageing. When older people remain in good health, they need less medical intervention, can remain in work for longer, and can contribute to the economy in later life. Despite the benefits posed by adult vaccination, shingles immunisation programmes across Europe remain undervalued and underutilised.

Our research across nine countries – Austria, Belgium, France, Greece, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and the UK – shows that less than 10% of people over-50 have been vaccinated against shingles. Given that the virus which causes shingles costs the EU €660 million per year, encouraging greater vaccination and increasing coverage is vital.

At this roundtable, we’ll present our findings from our research and engage in conversation with experts to understand what can be done better.
