From June to September 2016, the ILC-UK has contributed to the debate on the role of migration in a rapidly ageing society; released the 2016 ILC-UK factpack, which this year focused on the state of the nation’s housing; and published a major new work on the future of the UK welfare state.

In June, The Financial Times and The Independent covered ILC-UK’s ‘Immigration: Encourage or deter?’report. The paper was published to inform both sides of the EU Referendum campaign as their attention turned to the impact of inward migration on the UK economy. In September, a follow-up to the 2015 report ‘Moved to Care’ was published in response to the changing circumstances brought about by Brexit. ‘Brexit and the future of the migration social care workforce’ was discussed on BBC Radio 4’s The Today Programme; BBC 1 Breakfast News; ITV’s The Victoria Derbyshire Programme; in The Guardian, and in The Yorkshire Post, amongst other publications.
In June, the ILC-UK also published ‘Innovate to Alleviate’, the first report of its kind to examine the newly created ‘Enhanced Care Worker’ role. The report featured qualitative data garnered from all levels of the care home sector, and received coverage in Care Management Matters, The Carer, and the National Care Forum.

A major new publication, ‘The Future of the UK Welfare State’, featuring contributions from business leaders, leading academics and politicians from all main Westminster parties was covered in The Independent and The Financial Times. ILC-UK’s 2016 Factpack, which this year focused on the state of the nation’s housing was covered in The Sunday Times, The Express, and by BBC Radio Northampton.
ILC-UK research on the impact of migration restrictions on the social care sector was also featured in The Economist, and Policy and Public Affairs Officer Dave Eaton spoke to The Financial Times about the policy dilemmas posed by the number of centenarians quadrupling over recent years.
